That giant fire you sometimes see burning above an oil refinery isn't necessarily a sign that something is wrong.
I passed by Dangote Refinery last week, and one thing that caught my attention was the massive flame burning high above the facility.
Of course, I had questions. 😂
Why is there a fire burning up there? Is something being burnt? Is it supposed to be there?
Well, I later connected it to something called a flare stack.
In oil and gas facilities, flare stacks are designed to safely burn off excess gases that cannot be recovered or processed at that moment.
This helps manage excess pressure and safely dispose of certain unwanted gases during operations, maintenance or unexpected process upsets.
So, that giant flame isn't just there for decoration. There's an important safety function behind it.
Oil and gas is interesting because sometimes, what looks like a simple fire is actually part of a carefully designed industrial process.
Now you know what that flame is doing up there!
Had you ever wondered about those flames before?
