OIL & GAS TERMINOLOGY 101: What does OPEX mean?

No, it's not the name of an oil company. 😂

OPEX stands for Operating Expenditure.

Simply put, it's the money a company spends to keep its day-to-day operations running.

In the oil and gas industry, this could include:

- Equipment maintenance and repairs.

- Salaries and wages.

- Fuel and power costs.

- Transportation and logistics.

- Routine operational expenses.

Here's an easy way to remember it:

CAPEX = Money spent to build or acquire something.

OPEX = Money spent to keep it running.

For example, buying a drilling rig is a capital expense (CAPEX), while maintaining and operating that rig involves operating expenses (OPEX).

So, the next time you hear someone mention OPEX in an oil and gas meeting, you'll know what they're talking about.

You are welcome 😌
