There is an interesting paradox in the oil and gas business.

Sometimes, the field everyone wants is not necessarily the field with the best opportunity.

And sometimes, the field nobody wants anymore can become very attractive.

Why?

Infrastructure.

Imagine two discoveries.

Field A has a large estimated resource, but it is in a remote location. There is no nearby pipeline, processing facility, export route or established service base.

Field B is smaller, but it sits close to existing infrastructure.

Which one would you rather develop?

The answer is not always Field A.

A smaller resource with access to existing infrastructure can sometimes make more commercial sense because the developer may not have to build an entire ecosystem from scratch.

This is one reason brownfield developments, marginal fields and tie-back projects are so interesting.

The industry is not only about finding oil.

It is about finding oil economically.

And that distinction matters.

A barrel underground has no economic value until you can produce it, transport it, process it and sell it at a cost that makes commercial sense.

This is also where I see opportunities for Nigerian businesses.

So when we talk about developing Nigeria’s upstream sector, I think we should look beyond the headline reserve numbers.

Sometimes the real opportunity is sitting much closer to the infrastructure we already have.

In oil and gas, proximity can be as valuable as discovery.
