Another day, Another class on OIL & GAS TERMINOLOGIES 😁

What does “Rig” actually mean?, and I don’t mean, that “rig” during elections 😏.

You hear “oil rig” all the time, but a rig is not where the oil is stored.

An oil rig is a structure or equipment used to drill a well into the ground or seabed.

Its main job is simple:

Drill → Reach the reservoir → Create a well

And there are different types depending on where and how drilling is taking place.

Some rigs operate on land, while others operate offshore.

Here’s the part people often get wrong:

A rig drills the well. It doesn't necessarily produce the oil.

Once the well has been drilled and completed, other production equipment is used to bring the oil and gas to the surface.

So, in simple terms:

Rig = Drills the well.

Not stores the oil.

Not a petrol station.

Not necessarily the production facility.

Just one very important part of the journey from reservoir to surface.
