I have seen a lot of conversations about the Dangote Refinery IPO.

Some people are already convinced they want to buy. Others are asking whether this is actually a good investment.

My position remains simple.

I will not tell you to buy it. I will not tell you not to buy it.

Why?

Because an investment decision that makes sense for one person may not make sense for another.

Before putting your money into Dangote Refinery, I believe there are a few questions you should ask yourself.

What exactly am I buying?

How does Dangote Refinery make money?

What do its financials look like?

What are its major risks?

How much debt does the business carry?

What happens if crude supply becomes more expensive or difficult?

How sensitive are its margins to global petroleum product prices?

What valuation am I buying at?

And perhaps most importantly:

What is my investment objective?

The fact that a company is large, strategic or highly visible does not automatically make its shares suitable for every investor.

Dangote Refinery is undoubtedly one of the most significant industrial projects in Nigeria. But investors should separate the importance of the project from the economics of buying its shares.

That distinction matters.

For Nigerians in the diaspora, there are also additional considerations around access, approved investment channels, documentation and applicable regulations.

So before you invest, don’t just ask:

“Will Dangote Refinery succeed?”

Ask:

“Does buying these shares make sense for me at this price and within my financial plan?”

Do your research.

Understand what you are buying.

Then make your own decision.

That, in my opinion, is what responsible investing should look like.
