What does “Wellhead” mean?

You’ll hear the word wellhead a lot in oil & gas, but what exactly is it?

Simply put, the wellhead is the equipment installed at the top of an oil or gas well.

Think of it as the control point between the well underground and the equipment above ground (or on an offshore facility).

It helps:

- Support the casing and other components of the well

- Control the pressure coming from the well

- Provide a connection point for production equipment

So when you hear someone say:

“The wellhead is under pressure.”

They’re talking about the equipment at the top of the well that helps contain and control the pressure from the reservoir below.

Easy way to remember:

Wellhead = The top of the well + pressure control.

Simple, but pretty important, because you definitely don't want an uncontrolled well turning on its own . 😅
