DID YOU KNOW

Oil can be found far beneath the ocean and we can drill for it.

Yes, some oil fields aren’t on land at all.

They are located beneath the seabed, sometimes in waters hundreds or even thousands of metres deep.

This is called offshore oil production.

The interesting part?

The oil isn’t actually inside the ocean. It is trapped in rock formations beneath the seabed, just like oil found underground on land.

Special offshore rigs and production facilities are used to drill through the seabed and reach these reservoirs.

So when you see a massive oil platform standing in the middle of the ocean, it isn't simply “sitting on oil.”

There can be layers of water, rock and other geological formations between that platform and the reservoir.

Pretty fascinating when you think about it.

The ocean may be above it, but the oil is deep beneath it.

Interesting!!
