Africa’s Energy Future Won’t Be Built by Operators Alone.
One thing working around the energy industry has taught me is that major projects are ecosystems.
An offshore development might have an international operator at the centre. But surrounding that operator are hundreds of companies and thousands of professionals providing specialised services.
Surveying.
Drilling.
Marine logistics.
ROV operations.
Engineering.
Fabrication.
Inspection.
Environmental services.
HSE.
Technology.
Project management.
Finance.
Recruitment.
This is why I believe Africa’s energy opportunity should be viewed through a value-chain lens.
When a billion-dollar project enters development, the opportunity isn’t necessarily a billion-dollar contract for one company.
It can become hundreds of smaller opportunities distributed across an ecosystem.
The challenge is finding those opportunities early enough.
For indigenous businesses, market intelligence therefore becomes more than a research function. It becomes a competitive advantage.
Know where projects are coming.
Know who is involved.
Understand what capabilities will be required.
Build relationships before procurement begins.
Position before the tender lands.
In business development, being early can sometimes be more valuable than being bigger.
What has helped you discover opportunities earlier in your industry: relationships, market intelligence, conferences, digital platforms, or referrals?
